Nonamessett and November

Our seasons of light, of warmth, are over.

The increasing darkness of September and October signaled leaves to prepare for departure and death.

Green faded away.

The departure of chlorophyll exposes the chemicals which give us fall’s brief reign of vegetable color.

Chlorophyll green yields to xanthophyll yellows, to carotenoid oranges, to anthocyanin reds and purples.

A few days ago, I took the ferry to the Vineyard.

We passed Nonamesset.

Nonamessett’s low hills showed their last hot embers of color.
