Logan to Mexico City


Logan Airport in Boston at dawn is always fascinating. At almost any airport, you never know how long lines will be, what impact weather or unforeseen event will have on plans.

You wait. You anticipate.

First light’s raking rays limn orange a room of waiting passengers.

The periodic roar of launching engines punctuates the clatter and commotion.

Inside reflections add visual rhythms to the outside scenes.

All must obey the rituals of boarding pass, of “group A, B, or C”, of submitting credentials to electronic eyes. All walk the jetway, clot at the door of the plane, and squeeze down the aisle to find their seats. Mine is window, near a wing.

We wait. Outside, angles abound.

We taxi, turn, accelerate, and leap into the sky. The familiar patterns and architecture of New England city and suburb lie briefly below. Screen Shot 2019-02-05 at 12.24.48 PM

We turn southwest, ascend, and cruise at speed high above the land.

Alongside the ancient Appalachians, white-coated farmers’ fields crisscross the piedmont and push into the the valleys that drain the higher slopes. Over millions of years, the rivers we pass over have carried uncountable millions of tons of mountains to the sea.  In a few hundred millions of years, these mountains have gone from five-digit Himalayan heights to mere four-digit modesty.

Landscapes yield to cloudscapes…

After hours, clouds clear —

And towns, green fields, even a distant extinct volcano can be seen.

Not too long afterwards…

As the old song said, I’d never really been and I didn’t really know…

But here we were, in Mexico.
