At sunset on the first day of winterI took a walk in an old field.
It’s a fine old field. It’s been kept mowed, but has not been plowed in decades, so the ground has an extensive patina of lichens and plants that persist even when cut. The rich reddish tan color is little bluestem grass, which is a “signature” old field and grassland plant in these parts. The next photo is of a section that has gotten a fall mowing. Remnant tractor tracks depress stubble with straight lines.
It’s a fine old field. I don’t come here a lot, but I come here at least a few times a year.
I’m always glad when I do.
