The Islanders Take a Trip to the No’thard, Part the First

The Island People took the ferry, and went Off-Island. There are yet more words we use to describe this traveling other places.  We go Away. We go to the Mainland, or for short, to the Main. We go to the Continent. We go to America.

Our passage was in the late evening. The captain used the searchlight to pick his way through the curvy and rock-bordered channel  into Woods Hole.

There it is!

You’re really “off-island” when you cross over the Cape Cod Canal.

Another big landmark is Sister Corita’s gas tank graphic, outside of Beantown.

Then the Zakim Bridge.

To be continued….

One of you readers, today, will be visitor number 7,000 to thetompostpile.

Thank you for stopping by.

  1. We’ve always jokingly referred to taking the ferry to Woods Hole as “going overseas”……or “going to America” just as you said.
