Trailing Arbutus.

Where are the mayflowers? I haven’t found one blooming yet this year, and the most reliable early-flowering clump I know of, on the north side of the yard, at the base of a fifty-year-old white oak tree, has only one small set of buds, nowhere near open. Which seems odd, in this year of 2012 when spring is early in so many other ways. This photograph is from exactly one year ago today.

  1. perhaps this species requires a harsh winter for a full rest cycle. Is is possible the mild winter threw them off-schedule?
